Christian Apologetics: Stories that matter – Lee Strobel, “A Case for Christ” and “A Case for Heaven”

Lee Strobel

This week I’d like to highlight Christian Apologist, Speaker and Author, Lee Strobel who has by far had the most profound and lasting influence on my studies in Christian Apologetics. His journey from atheism to Christianity is amazing, and the subsequent series of “Case for” books can impact anyone from the most ardent skeptic to the mature Christian.

Atheist-turned-Christian Lee Strobel, the former award-winning legal editor of The Chicago Tribune, is a New York Times best-selling author of more than forty books and curricula that have sold fourteen million copies in total. His classic, The Case for Christ, is a perennial favorite which details his conversion to Christianity, and has even been made into a movie about his life. Lee’s 2016 book, The Case for Grace, won the Nonfiction Book of the Year from the EPCA, and his most recent book out this last year is one of my favorites called The Case for Heaven

This is what Lee says is the reason for his newest case:

“Several years ago, my life nearly ended. In the words of the emergency room physician: “You’re one step away from a coma, two steps away from dying.” And while I’m glad I’m still here, this ordeal changed me forever. It was a stark reminder that I’ll spend a lot more time in the afterlife than in this temporary home – and so it’s worth the effort to thoroughly investigate what awaits us after the grave. I emerged after years of research with fresh confidence about eternity – and I hope my new book The Case for Heaven will encourage you as you ponder the exciting and exhilarating world to come!”

-Lee Strobel, author of The Case for Heaven

For over twenty-five years, his life’s work has been to share the evidence that supports the truth claims of Christianity and to equip believers in their confidence and ability to share their faith with others. Lee currently serves as Founding Director of the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University.

Bible Study

Note: Basic answers will be posted mid-week for your review, and to make a leader’s guide for future studies!

Always remember to pray before you study and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and lead you into the truth found in God’s Word – pray for protection from the evil one who will try to discourage, distract and deceive us when we commit to growing closer to the LORD.

Note: Questions are taken directly from the chapters, and answers should be found and cited from the Scripture text in order to be Biblically accurate (unless asked to summarize in your own words). Study Bibles, commentaries and your own thoughts can be used for Discussion or Going Deeper questions. If you use these kinds of sources share them with your group.

1.  Review of Class Topic:

With your group, discuss today’s presentation by summarizing what you learned, commenting or asking any questions.

Read 1 Timothy 2:1-15 with your group then, to the best of your ability, answer the following questions:

2.  What was Paul’s call to prayer, to whom and why?

3.  Who did Paul say was the one and only mediator between God and men, and why? Cross-reference by reading John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:21-24; and 5:1-2; Galatians 3:19-22; and Hebrews 9:15-16.

4.  It is important to understand that in the culture of the day in which Paul is writing to Timothy, women were not allowed (for the most part) to study and become educated. When Paul talks about women learning in quietness and full submission, he was actually offering them an amazing new opportunity, which was the encouragement to learn. Also, because women were not typically educated, and did not have adequate Biblical knowledge, it would not have been a good idea for them to do any teaching. In addition, this early Church was dealing with a lot of false teachers and teachings that were trying to infiltrate. Keeping that in mind: What are some of the things that Paul instructed the women to do? Why might this be important?

5.  Discuss and going deeper: There are differing views in Christianity as to the role women are to play in the Church, often based on passages like this one in chapter two. Research the culture of the first century and the context of this passage and others that support, or do not support, these differing views.

6.  Memory verses: Recite – 1 Timothy 1:15 (reason for salvation); 2 Timothy 2:5 (Jesus, the one and only mediator)

Join us next week as we continue our study in Christian Apologetics with more stories that matter, and a study in 1 Timothy!

You will not find this material in the public school curriculum even though it is based on solid evidence and grounded in research. It is ironic that following the evidence to where it leads stops at the door of our public schools as they will not let a “Divine footprint” in!  Join us as we examine evidence for Christianity and learn how to become a thoughtful defender and ambassador of your faith.
