A Case for Genesis, Session 6, Part Three: Is Genesis History?

This week we taking a break from our regular class presentation and watching the all-important documentary “Is Genesis History.” This documentary will help in our understanding of the Biblical Flood Narrative based on the evidence we can see all around us today. There are many scientists and historians, both Christian and non, that are confident in the narrative of a global flood as the reason for much of the geography and topography we can evaluate in our world today, and we will listen to some of them in this documentary. We will continue to spend time on this topic over the next few weeks, so I hope you will continue to join us!

“Is Genesis History” is a documentary that covers many of the questions people have about the evidence pointing to a global flood, just as the Bible narrative gives us. Watch, and listen to, experts in their fields of science look at the physical evidence and give reasons to believe its cause and origin:

After watching the documentary it is my hope that your interest in this topic will be peaked, and there are so many other resources and experts in this field of study that you can explore. Below is the list of top websites I would recommend if you really want to go deeper in your understanding of the Biblical narrative as it relates to the evidence we see all around us today. Most of these references have YouTube sites with presentations on various Genesis topics along with articles and research presentations on their websites.

As Christians we should be students of the Bible and defenders of the faith, knowing what we believe, and why we believe it. The Bible is God’s Word and has always proven true in what it reports. The Bible contains history as well as prophecy, and we would do well to view these times we live in as the last days:

“Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”

2 Peter 3:3-7 (NASB)

“but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.”

1 Peter 3:15 (NASB)

Bible Study

Each week we will have Bible study following the presentation. There will be questions presented here on the weekend, and basic answers will be posted mid-week for your review. This can also be used to make a leader’s guide for your own small group and future studies!

Always remember to pray before you study and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and lead you into the truth found in God’s Word – pray for protection from the evil one who will try to discourage, distract and deceive us when we commit to growing closer to the LORD.

1.  Review of Class Topic:

With your table group, discuss today’s presentation by summarizing what you learned, commenting or asking any questions.

Read Genesis Chapter 9 with your group then, to the best of your ability, answer the following questions:

Note: As you discuss some of these questions, keep in mind that at this point in history there was no written “Law” as of yet.

2.  What did God say to Noah as He blessed them (9:1-2)? Discuss: What are some ways we observe the truth of what God said in verse 2, and why is that important?

3.  What did God say about food and food restrictions (9:3-4)? Discuss: Why do you think it changed after the Flood?

3.  What did God tell Noah concerning “shedding the blood of another man” (9:5-6)? Discuss: Why do you think God gave that command?

4.  What Covenant did God establish and whom did He establish it with (9:8-11)? What was the sign of this Covenant, and why is it important (9:12-17)?

5.  Who were the sons of Noah (9:18-19)? What else do we know about them from Scripture?

6.  Describe what Noah’s Sons did when their father got drunk (9:20-23). Discuss: Why do you think Ham’s behavior was unacceptable?

7.  Going Deeper: What was the curse Noah gave, who was it upon (look closely), and how did Noah bless his other two sons (9:24-29)? How was the curse and blessings played out prophetically later in the Old Testament?

Please join us each week as we continue our case for Genesis!

You will not find this material in the public school curriculum even though it is based on solid evidence and grounded in research. It is ironic that following the evidence to where it leads stops at the door of our public schools as they will not let a “Divine footprint” in!  Join us as we examine evidence for Christianity and learn how to become a thoughtful defender and ambassador of your faith.
